For over 60 years, the Northern Virginia Model Railroaders, Inc. club has met the needs of local model railroad enthusiasts. We meet every Tuesday evening in the historic Vienna, Virginia railroad station that once served the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad where we have built an extensive HO scale layout. The layout depicts the Southern Railway’s Western North Carolina line from Salisbury to Asheville as it existed in the early 1950’s when US railroads were transitioning from steam to diesel power. The multilevel layout is open to the public at least 10 times a year, as listed in our Schedule Section. While our layout has existed in its current form for many years, we are continuously upgrading and enhancing it so that there are a number of new things to see. Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends have been known to show up at many of our open houses.
The 150 year old Vienna station suffered damage from the past winter snowstorms and is currently undergoing structural improvements to strengthen the walls and roof. In preparation for this renovation, we have temporarily removed all locomotives, rolling stock, and structures for safekeeping. With the work anticipated to be completed by October, we will be able to return to the station to restore the layout to running condition. Please visit this site for progress reports on both the station and layout and the resumption of our open houses.
During this period, we are meeting every Tuesday evening around 7:00 PM in the basement of the Vienna Assembly of God Church diagonally across from the station. We always welcome anyone interested in the fine art of model railroading to join us.
