History Thrives at the Old Vienna Station ….
The old Vienna train station was instrumental in creating and growing Vienna as a regional farming
center In the 19th century and regional commercial center in the 20th century. The Washington and Old
Dominion Railroad was Vienna’s lifeline to the world and more importantly, to the Nation’s Capital.
Northern Virginia Model Railroaders, embracing these historic roles, has established a museum in the
station waiting room tracing the development and activities of the railroad from its arrival in 1859 until
its demise in 1968. Through historic photos, the many twists and turns of the W&OD are told including
its role as an electrified passenger railway from 1913 until 1931, Northern Virginia’s first Metro System.

In 2023, several original artifacts of the W&OD were returned to the station including the original iron
stove from 1904, the Church Street crossing sign, and samples of original rail installed in 1871.
While running or biking on the W&OD Trail it is hard to visualize the railway that predates the trail and is
responsible for this great recreational resource that so many enjoy today. NVMR welcomes visitors to
the museum on its regular public open house dates as well as by special appointment for history buffs
and education leaders.

The W&OD Railroad

The Washington and Old Dominion Railroad started in Alexandria, and went all the way to Bluemont, Virginia, just short of the Appalachian Mountains. Closing in 1968, the railroad right of way is now used by Dominion energy as a power line corridor, and the Washington and Old Dominion trail, a popular bike and walking trail run by NOVA Parks.
